About the Data Storage Service

The Data Storage Service (DSS) supports teams that need to manage structured clinical data. The service helps them store and update patients’ clinical information.

The service also handles unstructured content such as:

• documents
• forms
• images

Who the Data Storage Service is for

Digital health services that need their own reliable data store to support clinical or operational activity.

These services are currently using the DSS:

• appointments and letters, using the MyCare.scot app
• digital dermatology, using the Accelerated National Innovation Adoption (ANIA) initiative
• the Medical Device Data Hub (MDDH), using the Scan for Safety programme
• the ReSPECT (Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment) process as a data store

How the Data Storage Service works

The DSS supports health and care services that need to keep a record of clinical or operational activity over time by providing a reliable way to store and manage clinical information. The DSS provides:

• a dedicated data store for structured information
• secure storage for unstructured content
• an API that allows systems to read and write data

Differences between the Data Storage and the Data Access Services

The Data Storage Service is not the same as the Data Access Service (DAS). The DAS provides quick, up-to-date information on patients’:

• allergies
• medication

The DAS does not store or manage data locally.

The DSS is currently In Production.
